People Who Have Walked on the Moon

people who have walked on the moonThe list of people who have walked on the Moon is fairly short, given that the first occurrence happened in 1969. Since the moment Neil Armstrong made his claim to fame as the first to do so, only 11 others have¬†followed. There were six manned United States landings between 1969 and 1972, each being part of NASA’s Apollo program. Apollo 11 was the first mission to have landed on the moon, as the first ten were used for testing purposes; making sure the Command and Lunar Modules worked correctly. Apollo Flight 8 was the first manned mission to be sent to the Moon, but the crew of Frank Borman, Bill Anders, and Jim Lovell only orbited it and never set foot on the surface.

The list below outlines the 12 people who have walked on the moon and which space mission they were a member of.

8James Irwin

  • 8th person to walk on the Moon
  • Lunar Module Pilot for Apollo 15
  • Stepped foot on the Moon on July 31, 1971
